Buy Home Composters

About one half of household waste is compostable kitchen and garden rubbish. Composting is an easy way to cheaply return the nutrients of this organic material to the soil. Compost may be used as a soil conditioner and a surface mulch.

South Dublin County Council is now providing 235-litre capacity Home Composters to domestic customers living within the Local Authority area at a price of €40.00 each.

The contents of the Home Composter are used by the owner as garden compost and are not collected by South Dublin County Council.

What can I put in my composter?
A mixture of items in both "Green" and "Brown" layers may be added, including:

"Green":Leaves

  • Garden waste
  • Leaves
  • Weeds (not weed seeds)
  • Dead plants and flowers
  • Grass and hedge cuttings
  • Branches and twigs
  • Kitchen scraps
  • Fruit, vegetables
  • Tea bags and coffee

"Brown":Eggshells

  • Kitchen paper
  • Sawdust and wood shavings
  • Straw
  • Paper / egg boxes
  • Wood
  • Larger twigs and branches (cut up into pieces)
  • Crushed egg shells
  • Feathers
  • Newspaper - torn / dampened
