Control of Dogs and Dog Pound
The Dog Warden service looks after stray and unwanted dogs and enforcement in relation to the Control of Dogs Acts. These are the Control of Dogs Act, 1986, and the Control of Dogs (Amendment) Act, 1992. All surrendered and stray dogs are brought to our Dog Pound in Dunboyne. Ph: (01) 8026676.

Licences:
A dog must be licensed if it is six weeks old or as soon as it has left its mother. If you are a dog owner you are responsible for ensuring that you have a current dog licence.
Buying a Licence:
A Dog Licence costs €12.70. Licences are available online at http://www.southdublin.ie/doglicence/index.aspx or from offices in South Dublin County Council, Town Centre, Tallaght or the Clondalkin Office, Civic Centre, Clondalkin Dublin 22 and from any Post Office. Cheques and details may be sent to Environmental Services in Tallaght. Cheques are made payable to South Dublin County Council.
Penalties:
Any person having an unlicensed dog is liable to an on the spot fine of €30 and/or prosecution - with fines up to €1,269.74.
Leashes:
a) All dogs must be kept under effectual control when in any public place i.e. street, road, park etc.
b) Certain breeds must always be leashed. These include: American Pit Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Doberman Pinscher, English Bull Terrier, German Shepherd, Japenese Akita, Japenese Tosa, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and every other strain or cross of the above mentioned breeds. These dogs should also be muzzled and accompanied by a person over the age of 16 years when in a public place.
c) All dogs must be leashed when in Council owned parks.
d) It is an offence not to have the owner’s identity on a dog collar, tag or badge.
Penalties:
Penalties for breaches of the Control of Dogs Acts, Regulations or Bye Laws range from €30 “on the spot fines” which are issued by the Dog Wardens, to maximum fines of €1,269.74 and/or 3 months imprisonment which may be imposed by the District Court.
Barking Dogs:
Complaints in relation to excessive barking should be made to the district court on the appropriate form. For further information, contact the District Office, Four Courts, Dublin 1 at (01) 8886364.
Dog Fouling:
You must clean up any Dog Litter which has been deposited by your dog in any street, road, path, etc. in the South Dublin area. Failure to do so is an offence under the Litter Pollution Act, 1997 (Maximum fine €3,000). Dog Faeces can be a source of disease. Dog fouling complaints can be made to the Litter Warden for the area. Unwanted dogs:
Unwanted dogs should be brought to the attention of our Dog Wardens' Section at (01) 4149000 or our Dog Pound where they will be accepted free of charge on production of a valid Dog Licence.
Rehoming:

Stray dogs:
Stray dogs may be seized by the Council’s Dog Wardens. They will be brought to the Dog Pound where they will be kept for five days in order for their owners to reclaim them. A “stray dog” is a dog which is in a public place and not accompanied by the owner or some other responsible person.

Directions:
Take the Blanchardstown Exit off M50. Proceed past Blanchardstown Shopping Centre and take Clonee & Dunboyne Exit off N3. Go straight through Clonee and on to Dunboyne. Pass through Dunboyne Village, keeping Shell Garage to your right. Exactly 4 miles out at bend on road with signpost for Summerhill you will see a gateway with two white pillars with "Blackhall Kennels" on small black sign. Go straight through gates and proceed to pound.
